Acupuncture, herbs, and moxibustion are effective for the treatment of COVID-19 (coronavirus). Investigators determined that acupuncture plus herbal medicine produces significant patient outcomes for patients with COVID-19. In another independent clinical trial, moxibustion relieved diarrhea in COVID-19 patients and reduced the occurrence of positive nucleic acid results for coronavirus. Let’s take a look at both investigations.

Acupuncture outperforms loratadine for the treatment of chronic urticaria (hives). In research conducted at the First Affiliated Hospital of Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine, acupuncture plus moxibustion produced an 89.66% total effective rate. Drug therapy using loratadine (an antihistamine) produced a 72.41% total effective rate. The results were measured with urticaria severity scores, indices of life quality, and serum levels of bioindicators at the completion of all medical treatments. [1]

A study published by Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center researchers indicates that an integrative medicine approach to patient care produces significant positive patient outcomes. Based on Chinese medicine principles and modern scientific investigations, Shufeng Jiedu capsules, antiviral medications, and antibiotics were combined in a rigorous treatment regimen.

Acupuncture combined with herbal medicine is a proven and effective therapeutic method for the elimination of respiratory tract infections. Zhengzhou University Affiliated Children’s Hospital (often referred to as Henan Provincial Children’s Hospital) researchers compared using Yu Ping Feng San (YPF) herbal medicine monotherapy with a combination of Chinese herbal medicine plus acupuncture. The acupuncture plus herbal medicine YPF arm achieved a total treatment effective rate of 92.86%. Using only YPF, the total treatment effective rate was 76.79%. [1]

Acupuncture is effective for the alleviation of severe pneumonia. Across two independent studies, researchers made several important findings. Acupuncture reduced clinical symptom presentations, shorted mechanical ventilation times, reduced the need for antibiotics, and improved gastrointestinal functions in severe pneumonia patients.

Acupuncture benefits patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Wu’an Hospital of Chinese Medicine (Hebei, China) researchers conducted a clinical trial. They conclude that a combination of acupuncture and Bu Shen Huo Xue Tang herbal formula provides significant clinical results for Alzheimer’s disease patients. Patients receiving acupuncture plus herbs experienced improvements in cognitive function and quality of life (total effective rate 84%). The drug control group had a 68% total effective rate. [1]

Acupuncture outperforms drug therapy for the treatment of asthma. Researchers from Xiamen Chinese Medicine Hospital (a Fujian Traditional Chinese Medical University affiliate) compared the efficaciousness of acupuncture with salmeterol xinafoate plus fluticasone propionate drug therapy for the treatment of chronic asthma. Salmeterol xinafoate is a bronchodilator and fluticasone propionate is an inhaled corticosteroid used to control asthma. Drug therapy achieved an 88.9% total effective rate and acupuncture achieved a 93.3% total effective rate. [1]

Acupuncture restores hand function in patients with hemiplegia. Foshan Jianxiang Hospital (Guangdong, China) researchers conclude that active motion acupuncture significantly improves outcomes for patients with hand dysfunction due to hemiplegia. The researchers document improvements in motor function, reductions in spasticity, and overall improvements in activities of daily living. [1]

Acupuncture increases the efficacy of drug therapy for the treatment of sepsis due to pneumonia. Researchers from Guang'anmen Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Science combined electroacupuncture with drug therapy. Patients receiving both drug therapy and electroacupuncture had superior patient outcomes compared with patients receiving drug monotherapy. The researchers conclude that the addition of acupuncture to a drug treatment regimen increases the total effective rate, assists in the regulation of immune system functions, increases anti-febrile actions, and alleviates inflammatory reactions.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine are effective for the treatment of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 19). The Beijing Health Commission notes that 87% of COVID-19 patients in Beijing received traditional Chinese medicine treatment (acupuncture and herbs). The commission documents that the total effective rate for patients receiving TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) treatment is 92%. [1]

Acupuncture is effective for the prevention of neurotoxicity caused by oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy. In research conducted at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui University of Chinese Medicine, acupuncture reduced neurotoxicity rates to 30.00%. Another group receiving intravenous B12 (mecobalamin) therapy yielded a 36.84% neurotoxicity incidence rate. Both of these approaches to controlling adverse reactions outperformed chemotherapy without additional care, which produced a 78.95% neurotoxicity incidence rate. [1]

​​Acupuncture is more effective than proton pump inhibitors and antibiotics for the treatment of chronic atrophic gastritis (stomach mucosa inflammation causing gastric cell loss and pathological growth of fibrous tissues), according to Dezhou Third People's Hospital researchers. In another independent investigation, acupuncture improved the effectiveness of drugs for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in patients with chronic atrophic gastritis. H. pylori is a bacterium that causes inflammation, ulcers, and other gastrointestinal issues. Let’s take a look at how results were achieved.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine improve patient outcomes for patients with acute or chronic appendicitis. Jining City Municipal Hospital (Shandong) researchers tested two protocols. One group received usual care, and another received usual care plus the addition of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The acupuncture and herbal medicine group had a 94.44% effective rate compared with 89.47% in the usual care group. [1] Importantly, the addition of acupuncture and herbal medicine resulted in shorter hospitalization durations, faster resolution of abdominal pain, and faster regulation of body temperatures.

Acupuncture plus herbs increases the total effective rate of medications for the treatment of pneumonia. Researchers from Hanzhong Railway Central Hospital combined traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment with drug therapy in a controlled clinical trial. Two groups were compared. The control group received standard drug therapy. The treatment group received acupuncture and herbs in addition to identical drug therapy treatment protocols administered to the control group. The control group had an 88.33% total effective rate. The combined treatment group had a 98.33% total effective rate. The addition of TCM therapy increased the total effective rate by 10% (p<0.05). Acupuncture improves fallopian tube patency and increases pregnancy rates. A combination of warm needle acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine improves tubal patency and increases pregnancy rates in women with fallopian tube obstruction. These are the findings of a study conducted at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Tongchuan Chinese Medicine Hospital (Shaanxi, China). [1]

Acupuncture decreases the risk of heart disease in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Based on a sample size of 9,932 patients from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database, researchers determined that rheumatoid arthritis patients had a significantly lower risk of developing coronary heart disease if they received acupuncture. [1] This applies to patients receiving manual acupuncture or electroacupuncture. In addition, beneficial additive effects were found when combining acupuncture with conventional therapies.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine improve rheumatoid arthritis patient outcomes. Qingdao Integrated Medicine Hospital (Shandong) researchers conclude that a combination of acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and drug therapy is more effective than drug monotherapy. [1] Two groups were compared in a clinical study. One group received a combination of the herbal formula Wen Shen Tong Bi Tang, warm needle acupuncture, diclofenac, and methotrexate. The other group received only diclofenac and methotrexate. At 12 and 18 month follow-up assessments, patients receiving acupuncture, herbs, and drugs had significantly greater patient outcomes than patients receiving only drugs.

Acupuncture alleviates cancer pain and reduces opioid use. Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 14 randomized controlled trials and conclude that acupuncture reduces pain levels for patients with cancer. [1] In addition, the research indicates that opioid use may decrease significantly as a result of acupuncture analgesic treatments. The research was published in JAMA Oncology and includes contributions from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York), RMIT University (Australia), and Guangdong University (Guangzhou) researchers.

Acupuncture reduces the frequency and severity of angina attacks. [i] A multi-center investigation finds acupuncture treatment on disease-affected acupuncture channels is more effective than treatment on non-affected channels or sham acupuncture. The results were published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
