Acupuncture Improves Quality of Life in IBS Patients, Tianjin University Research Confirms

Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine researchers demonstrate that acupuncture improves quality of life and reduces symptom severity in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The research analyzed data from fourteen randomized controlled trials including 2,038 participants and determined that thirty-minute acupuncture sessions performed five or fewer times per week for four weeks yielded the most consistent benefit for IBS patients [1]. We’ll take a close look at the acupuncture points shown to produce optimal patient outcomes.

Acupuncture Restores Ovarian Function in PCOS

Acupuncture significantly restores ovarian endocrine and vascular function in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) through neuromodulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis [1]. Evidence shows that acupuncture regulates key hypothalamic neuropeptides—kisspeptin, neuropeptide Y (NPY), and dynorphin (DYN)—and neurotransmitters such as γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), serotonin (5-HT), dopamine, and glutamate, thereby normalizing gonadotropin release, sex hormone ratios, and ovarian morphology [1].

Acupuncture Post-Stroke Speech Improvements

A multicenter, sham-controlled randomized clinical trial conducted across three tertiary hospitals in China—the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Changchun University of Chinese Medicine, and Qilu Hospital of Shandong University—found that six weeks of manual acupuncture combined with standard language training significantly improved language function and neurological recovery in adults with post-stroke motor aphasia compared with sham acupuncture.

Acupuncture for Migraine Benefits & Metabolic Changes

A randomized controlled trial conducted at Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine demonstrated that true acupuncture significantly reduced migraine frequency and severity compared with sham acupuncture while producing distinct metabolic changes measurable in plasma metabolites [1]. The study combined clinical efficacy data with metabolomics to reveal that acupuncture modulates lipid, amino acid, and pyrimidine metabolism pathways associated with symptom improvement [1].

Acupuncture IBS Results Confirmed

A multicenter, randomized, sham-controlled trial reports that a standardized four-week acupuncture regimen delivered three times weekly produced substantially larger reductions in Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptom Severity Scale (IBS-SSS) scores than sham acupuncture in adults with refractory IBS, with benefits sustained through eight weeks and no serious adverse events [1]. From baseline to week 4, mean IBS-SSS decreased by 140.0 points in the true acupuncture arm versus 64.4 in the sham arm, and the week-4 responder rate (≥50-point IBS-SSS reduction) was 90.6% with true acupuncture versus 44.7% with sham [1].

Aromatherapy Chinese Herbal Antidepressant Effects

A team at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine has provided physiological evidence that volatile extracts of Méi Guī Huā (Rosa rugosa 玫瑰花), Shí Chāng Pú (Acorus tatarinowii 石菖蒲), and Xiāng Fù (Cyperus rotundus 香附) regulate depressive emotional states through distinct neural and autonomic pathways. The study demonstrates that these aromatic herbs, long valued in Chinese medicine, significantly modulate biosignals and reduce depression risk when delivered as short olfactory interventions [1].

Acupuncture Benefits for Low Back Pain in Medicare Restricted Treatment

A large multi-site randomized clinical trial has demonstrated that acupuncture provides sustained and clinically meaningful improvements in chronic low back pain (CLBP) among older adults. The study enrolled 800 participants aged 65 years and older across Kaiser Permanente Washington, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Sutter Health, and the Institute for Family Health in New York City, all of whom reported low back pain lasting at least three months with associated disability [1].

Acupuncture Provides Relief in Gouty Arthritis Flares

A systematic review and meta-analysis of fifteen randomized controlled trials involving 1,076 patients demonstrated that acupuncture is more effective than conventional medicine for the treatment of acute gouty arthritis (AGA) [1]. The investigators reported that electroacupuncture (EA) significantly improved overall clinical efficacy, reduced pain intensity, and lowered serum uric acid levels, while also producing fewer adverse reactions compared with pharmacologic therapy alone [1].

Acupuncture & Herbs for Tinnitus and Hearing Loss Discovery

acupuncture herbs tinnitus hearingLo

Hebei University researchers demonstrated that acupuncture and integrated herbal medicine interventions provide measurable therapeutic benefits in the treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and tinnitus [1]. SSNHL is defined as an idiopathic hearing impairment of at least 30 dB affecting three contiguous frequencies within 72 hours and has long posed difficulties for clinical management due to the limited efficacy of conventional pharmacological approaches [1]. Evidence from randomized controlled trials and preclinical investigations shows that acupuncture, particularly electroacupuncture, significantly improves auditory thresholds, while classical prescriptions such as Er Long Zuo Ci Wan (耳聋左慈丸, ELZCW) preserve cochlear hair cell function through well-defined molecular pathways [1].
